Shanta bats for Bharat Ratna for Dalai Lama

Former Union Minister and veteran BJP leader Shanta Kumar wrote to the Prime Minister asking him to consider conferring Bharat Ratna, India's highest civil honour, on the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. He also said that India should lift the question of Tibet with the United Nations. "India should act on these two suggestions as soon as possible, as the international scenario is favourable. The Dalai Lama is the most revered and respected spiritual leader in the world who considers India his Guru. India will also be rewarded by honouring him," Shanta wrote, adding that the 85-year-old spirit has already won the Nobel Peace Prize and has been honoured by several countries. The senior leader said, "The massacre of Tibet, which extended Mahatma Buddha's message of peace to the wor...

[World] China’s Canadian and Swiss ambassadors to make special visit to Tibet

In the past two months, Canadian and Swiss ambassadors to China have made rare visits to Tibet, witnessed local conditions and raised questions with their Chinese hosts, but have remained largely silent about what they saw there so far. Canada's representative to Beijing, Dominic Baton, visited the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) from 26 to 30 October, a Canadian government representative for global undertakings announced to the RFA Tibetan Service that Baton had been visiting Tibet for the first time since 2015 by a Canadian authority. "The Ambassador noted the circumstances and developments on the ground, drawn in with the Tibetans, and looked at issues of concern to Canada," the representative said, adding that foreign government officials need an official invitation to travel to the re...

Lobsang Sangay congratulates Biden, hopes renewed policy on Tibet

Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) President Lobsang Sangay congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris on their victory on Sunday, saying he is looking forward to a renewed policy and support for Tibet. "For decades now, the US has been supporting the Tibet cause on a number of fronts, and we are always grateful to the US and its people," Sangay said in his congratulations to Biden. "However, today the concern is no longer just for the Tibetan people; instead, today the concern is for global democracy and the universal ideals that have come under threat from authoritarian regimes such as China." Sangay welcomed Biden's recent statement vowing to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader and global peace icon, the Dalai Lama, continuing a decades-old trad...

Dr. Barley’s 31 year since enhancing food security in Tibet

Nutritionally rich, culturally significant and easy to prepare and carry about, Tsamba, a staple dish in Tibet Autonomous Region made from roasted barley flour and pounded yak butter dissolved in warm buttered-tea, has long been ingrained in ancient lore and everyday life of Tibetan people. It is an indispensable part of Tibetans' daily diets, as you may already know. But what you may not know is every bite of Tsamba the Tibetans savour is the result of one man's scientific and technological contribution, while the smiling faces of local farmers at the bumper harvest are a reflection of his unremitting hard work and dedication. Nyima Tashi, Tibet's chief scientist of highland barley crop breeding and the former head of the Tibet Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences (TAAA...

China’s quest to monitor the spiritual space of Tibet: Opinion

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) first recognised the importance of the religious authority of the Tibetan Lamas in 1992 when it accepted the rise of Ogyen Trinley Dorje, a boy recognised by the Dalai Lama as the 17th Karmapa, head of the Tibetan Buddhism Karma Kagyu School. Three years later, in the centuries-old practise of rebirth, China reiterated its claim to hegemony by the revival of the Qing dynasty system of using the golden urn to choose the 11th Panchen Lama, Tibet's second highest spiritual leader. Elliot Sperling, the world's leading expert on the subject, argues that the anachronistic resurrection of the golden urn is intended to create validity through historical continuity. But the presence of a golden urn in Tibetan religious and political affairs provides no evidence t...

China’s trying to broaden Control of Tibet By ‘Siniciating’ Tibetan Buddhism

In another move to extend its control over Tibet, China has set itself the target of 'Sinicisizing' Tibetan Buddhism, which is changing the faith under Chinese influence, according to media reports. Chinese President Xi Jinping said at the 7th Central Tibet Work Symposium in Beijing in August that "Tibetan Buddhism should be driven by adaptation to [China's] socialist society and be established in the Chinese context," Tenzin Sangmo reports for Taiwan News. Sangmo stated in the article that just a year ago, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), Jinping said: "There can be no force to stop the Chinese people and nation from marching forward." However, on the 71st anniversary, much has changed in the world and there are powers, both internal and ext...
